JUVE Scholarships for the Future 2010- Project Description
BACKGROUND ( SPANISH VERSION )
Statistics show that, on average, an individual with a 2-year college diploma (Associate) 25 % earn more than an individual graduated from high school. Meanwhile, a person with a university degree from a four-year degree (Bachelor) would earn 70 % more than a graduate from high school. According to an article in the New York Times, "only 16 % of Latino high school graduates receive the title of Bachelor." Among the reasons for the low number of students pursuing higher education, is the lack of financial resources. It is public knowledge that there are many scholarship opportunities for Hispanic students, minorities, special skills, careers, and others. There are also special scholarships for people from certain countries, but there was not a scholarship specifically for Ecuadorian born in Ecuador or from Ecuadorian descent. JUVE's mission is to channel, promote and facilitate the development of Ecuadorians and the creation of a scholarship fund to support our students is a vivid accomplishment of our mission. Thus, the first edition of this scholarship fund was created in 2009, and awarded five $ 1,000.00 scholarships to students from the New York Tri-State area to help paying for their educational expenses.
